Waiting an average of two-three weeks for a crown can be a real pain. Crowns are used to help teeth that are damaged beyond repair, by making them stronger and more beautiful. They can repair a wide array of oral health problems, including broken, chipped, misshaped, discolored, or worn down teeth.
Traditional Crowns
Traditional crowns take several appointments. At the first appointment, measurements and an impression are taken. These measurements are then sent to a lab where the crown is made, which usually takes a few weeks. The tooth is prepared for the crown on the first visit, which means some enamel is removed and the patient must wear a temporary crown until the permanent crown is ready. Temporary crowns can be extremely inconvenient, as they are designed to be removed and can easily slip out of place during eating or teeth-brushing.
Same-Day Crowns
Same-day crowns are all done in one appointment. At Avenues Dentistry, the appointment is about 90 minutes. Same-day crowns are made with a Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC) system, which means the crown can be made immediately in the office. A tiny camera is used to take a 3-D digital impression of the prepped tooth and the teeth surrounding it. The dentist is then able to make a custom fitted porcelain crown and cement the final crown on your tooth, all in one sitting. No more uncomfortable temporary crowns and no multiple appointments. Same-day crowns look extremely natural and are just as durable as traditional crowns.
