When your tooth is damaged beyond repair, we use porcelain dental crowns to make your smile stronger and more beautiful. As an extremely reliable dental treatment, crowns can repair even the most severe oral health problems, including teeth that are broken, chipped, misshaped, discolored, or worn down. If you’re in need of a dental crown, our Salt Lake City dental office can create a customized dental crown designed to enhance your smile.
How Dental Crowns Work
A crown, otherwise known as a cap, is used to cover a damaged tooth. Not only does it repair and strengthen a tooth, it can also improve the appearance or your smile. Besides working as a cap, it can also be used to place on top of a dental implant to provide a natural looking shape for appearance and function. At Avenues Dentistry, we offer porcelain crowns to match the natural color of your teeth. In some cases, the porcelain will be bonded to a metal shell in order to provide strength and a natural-looking smile.
Same Day Crowns
At Avenues Dentistry we have a CEREC, which is a dental product that allows the dentist to make a crown, veneer, inlay or onlay in one appointment. The appointment is about 90 minutes. This includes the time to prep the tooth for the crown, take impressions for the crown, make the crown in the office with the CEREC, and cement the final crown on the tooth. No more having to go with an uncomfortable temporary crown for two weeks, while your permanent crown is being made at a dental lab.
Dental Crown Care
After your dental crown appointment here at Avenues Family Dentistry, we recommend these care tips to better help your recovery. Practice carefully brushing your teeth and use sensitive toothpaste to start because they can now be sensitive to heat and cold. If you don’t already, now is a good time to start brushing your teeth twice a day as well as flossing to keep those teeth beautiful. Try to avoid using hard foods, like ice, which can cause your new crowns to crack and then you’ll have to start the procedure all over again. Remember dental crowns are easily able to crack and we are able to replace a small crack if that does happen. If you grind your teeth during your sleep at night, talk to our dentists here at Avenues Family Dentistry to provide you with a mouth guard.
Contact us here at Avenues Family Dentistry if you have any cracks or other issues involving your dental crowns after your procedures by visiting our website or over the phone.
The process of the crown appointment goes as follows: First, the dentist will prepare the tooth, cleaning up any decay and applying any medication or build up material needed. Next, the tooth is sprayed with a thin layer of powder used for taking pictures of the prepped tooth and the teeth that surround it with the CAD software. With this software, the dentist designs the crown using the images taken to make a custom fitted porcelain crown. The images are then sent wirelessly to the CEREC, where the crown is milled/cut out of a block of porcelain. Last, the crown is sprayed with a glaze and fired/baked in a small oven. The crown is bonded directly onto the tooth with a perfect fit. No temporary crown or extra appointment. All done in one sitting.
