How often do I have to go to the dentist?
In this post I will attempt to answer the question, “How often do I have to go to the dentist”? According to the American Dental Association’s consumer website “MOUTHHEALTHY.org”, the number of dental visits one needs per year depends on the patient. While some patients will only need to go to their dental professional 1-2 times per year, another patient may need to go their dental professional several times per year. The Mouth Healthy Organization states that the purpose of routine dental visits is for the early detection and prevention of dental problems.
I’m in agreement with the American Dental Association’s “MOUTHHEALTHY.org” consumer website in that there is no one size fits all when it comes to the number of dental visits needed per year. In both 2012 and 2013, my two oldest children had braces and went to the dental clinic a minimum of once every two weeks. Personally, I usually go every six months for a dental visit and cleaning because my insurance pays for a dental cleaning and visit every six months. The year 2017 was a bit different for me as far as dental visits and my oral health go. In 2017, I went to my two regular dental checkups and cleanings, had all my wisdom teeth removed, and was fitted for a mouth guard to prevent my teeth from grinding while asleep. My youngest son has Invisalign and went to the dental clinic a total of seven times last year. Even my dog is put under anesthesia every year so that her veterinarian at the pet hospital can give her a routine dental cleaning and checkup.
I must admit that I love going to my dental professional. If I could go to my dental professional every three months, I would. Maybe I love going to my dental professional so much because I have never had a dental cavity and I have perfectly straight teeth. It’s too bad that my kids inherit their teeth from their dad’s side of the family. Also, I love catching up with what’s going on in the lives of my dentist, dental hygienist, and dental secretary.
So, how often should one visit their dental professional?
How often one visits their dental professional depends on their dental problem, finances, and the individual needing dental care. Based on my life experiences, if you are a healthy individual with straight and healthy teeth, then routine visits every six months is ideal. If you have braces, you would need to visit your dental professional several times per month. If you are wearing Invisalign you would probably need to with your dental professional every 3 months depending on your specific needs and goals. If you have a dental emergency, you should go visit your dental professional as soon as possible. I’m not for sure when or where I heard the adage of “if you want to keep your teeth, you got to clean your teeth”. Routine dental visits not only helps in the early detection and prevention of dental problems, but taking care of your teeth leads to better hygiene, increased self-confidence, and a beautiful smile. Lastly, the only person who can truly answer the question of “How often do I have to go to the dentist?” is your dental health professional. So, call and make an appointment with a dental health professional today to find out your dental needs and take control of your oral health as soon as possible.
