The History of Glendale
Glendale as created originally as Glendale Gardens. The neighborhood now is the home of Glendale Middle School and Mountain View Elementary School. Glendale is known as an affordable place to live in the Salt Lake area due to its access to parks, downtown Salt Lake, and the airport is not far.
Glendale was settled by the George Q. Cannon family. The founder built a Victorian-style brick home, which still stands on 1354 South and 1000 West. This home built in 1976 is one of the oldest homes in the neighborhood. When the area was originally founded, there were several industrial areas, which included a brickyard, brewery, salt works, sound family, and a biscuit factory.
The entire neighborhood began remodeling after World War II and by the 1950s, most home had been repaired or replaced with newer homes. There were several subdivisions built after the war, offering a neighborhood for many of the military members sent to Utah as part of the Ninth Service Command.
Drive past the area south of California Avenue and just east of 1200 West and you will see some of the neighborhoods built during the time of great expansion. Glendale is still a popular area, and many of the post-World War II homes are now being replaced with modern homes. The Jordan River Parkway was developed and serves as one of the most popular areas for local residents to enjoy walking and running.
The city has been involved in making sure the Glendale neighborhoods have been improved. New bicycle paths, updates roads, and the 9 Line Trail make Glendale a connected neighborhood. Glendale is home to recreation enthusiasts as they have 10 parks, taking up about 88 acres of land.
Residents in Glendale can enjoy dining at several low-key restaurants, as well as stop by the Uinta Brewing Company for a tour. A fitness center and a shopping store complete out the neighborhood, making it a perfect solution for many residents. One popular attraction in Glendale is Seven Peaks, water park. Several large slides and a wave pool make Seven Peaks one of the most-popular areas in Salt Lake in the summer. One other fun thing for Glendale is the fact that it had one area used as part of the movie. The Sandlot. This movie filmed between Glenrose Drive and Navajo Street.
