Emigration Canyon is located on the east side of Salt Lake, starting near the University of Utah and stretching until it reaches past the canyon. The History of Emigration Canyon
The early Mormon Pioneers came through Emigration Camry when they were on their journey to what would become Salt Lake City. As the Mormon Pioneers came through the canyon, their leader, Brigham Young exclaimed, “This is the right place. Drive on.” His now famous words inspired This is The Place Heritage Park, which is close to the mouth of the canyon. There are hundreds of markers on the path through the canyon. The markers are designed to show information about designating camps and trails to follow.
Hogle Zoo
One of the most-famous areas of Emigration Canyon is Hogle Zoo. Hogle Zoo was constructed 1931 and is home to over 41-acres of tree-filled land. Hogle Zoo is popular with most Utah residents, and offers spectacular views of the canyon. The Zoo is East of This is The Place Heritage Park.
Emigration Canyon
The actual immigration canyon has 7.7 miles with a 5 percent grade, and the most accessible canyon ride from Salt Lake. Most of the terrain of Emigration Canyon is not developed as it is protected by the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The land designed to be part of the forest is protected by the Federal Government.
